The Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) is a regional, independent, non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening social science research and knowledge production in the Arab region. By supporting researchers and academic/research institutions, the ACSS aims to contribute to the creation, dissemination, validation and utilization of social science research in the region.

Part-time Senior Research Consultant for the Arab Social Science Monitor (ASSM)
The ASSM is an ACSS observatory of the landscape of the social science research and higher education in the Arab region. It documents the infrastructure of knowledge production (universities, research centers, professional associations, periodicals, etc.) and chronicles the work and careers of the social science community across the region. To that end, the ASSM collects and analyzes both quantitative and qualitative data and makes that data and knowledge publically available through data resources and publications.
Data for the ASSM is collected through various tools, the major ones being (1) a periodic survey of the social science community in the Arab region, (2) databases of social science institutions, products, practices, etc. and (3) commissioned papers for topical issues.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Senior Research Consultant will oversee and be responsible for the implementation of the quantitative research components of the ASSM and will also assist in managing other research activities as described below:
- Design and implement quantitative research including the development of research methodologies and instruments, data collection and processing, data analysis and interpretation and publication.
- Oversee survey administration and other research activities.
- Draft reports and communication of research findings.
- Prepare data visualization tables, graphs, charts and other visuals as well as PowerPoint presentations.
- Assist in developing methodologies for new databases and in the refinement and validation of existing databases on social science institutions (universities, research centers, professional associations, etc.), products (periodicals, etc.) and practices (tenure and promotion procedures, …) in the Arab region.
- Review and proofread reports, papers and other publications and their translated versions.
- Participate as appropriate in public presentations, advisory committee meetings, training workshops organized by the ASSM.
- Assist in the preparation of funding proposals and donor reports as related to areas of responsibility.
- Participate in planning and brainstorming for the overall development of the ASSM.
Qualifications and Competencies
- A Doctoral or Master’s degree in a social science discipline
- At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in social science research, including all aspects of survey research
- Proven track record of publications
- High level of proficiency in all MS Office applications (especially data tools)
- Knowledge of a statistical package (STAT, SPSS, etc.) is essential.
- Experience in qualitative research desirable.
- Proficiency in database and internet applications is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of Arabic and English is required. French is an asset.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Supervision
The Senior Research Consultant reports to the ASSM Project Leader. S/he works collaboratively with other ASSM and ACSS staff and consultants, as needed.
