The Academic Mentoring Program is a one-year pilot project that aims to provide hands-on intellectual support to Palestinian Anthropologists or those pursuing academic training in Anthropology. It provides practical academic mentorship along three main tracks:
1. The development of a journal article, dissertation chapter, or book prospectus
2. The development of a research grant in Anthropology
3. The development of an application for graduate study in Anthropology.
Who can Apply?
As a pilot project, the mentorship program will prioritize members of Insaniyyat including graduate students, junior and mid-career scholars. To become a member of Insaniyyat, follow this link: this link.
How does it Work?
Insaniyyat’s Academic Support Committee is building a pool of established anthropologists who are willing to serve as academic mentors. Successful applicants will be matched with the most suitable and available mentor.
Criteria for selection
The primary criterion for selection is the clarity of the proposal from the applicant, including a detailed account of the support requested. Mentorship is not intended to be an open-ended process, but as a structured process with specific end goals that are clearly agreed upon and articulated from the beginning. The availability of mentors will also determine selection.
Terms of the Mentoring Process
Mentees will be paired with mentors that share thematic concerns or who can best assist with their needs. Meetings may focus on any of the following issues: developing arguments and analytic frameworks; discussion of scholarly literatures; work on writing mechanics and structure; suggestions of possible publication outlets.
Mentors are *not* expected to provide the following: written comments on the document (feedback would be provided orally during the meeting); to rewrite the work; to write reference letters; to contact their scholarly networks in order to further the goals of the mentee; to identify granting agencies.
Time Frame: A maximum of 5 meetings of approximately one hour, throughout an academic year.
How to Apply
Interested applicants, who meet the basic criteria outlined above, should send the following:
- A short (500-750 words) statement explaining the research project and detailing the type of input they seek from an academic mentor. Applicants wishing to revise texts for publication should submit a draft version of the text they wish to revise. Applicants working on a dissertation chapter should include a dissertation abstract.
- An academic CV.

Applicants will be informed by August 15, 2023. The mentorship will begin in September, 2023
