About
The Program “Pathways from Neoliberalism: Voices from the Middle East and North Africa” at the American University in Cairo is pleased to announce a visiting fellowship for junior researchers (Ph.D. candidates, early career researchers and young faculty). The call is open for researchers from public and private Arab universities, to undertake a significant piece of publishable work in the fields of political economy, economics, economic sociology and anthropology, economic theory and economic history, preferably with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa.
Duration
The fellowship is to be held for 9 months.
Areas of Research
Political economy, economics, economic sociology and anthropology, political science, political and economic theory, economic history, environmental economics, gender studies and migration and refugee studies.
Eligibility
- Being enrolled in a Ph.D. program in a University within the Arab region, or having obtained a Ph.D. degree within the past five years (2019 or later).
- Early career researchers and young faculty members already holding academic or research positions may apply, keeping in mind that a full-time commitment to the fellowship is expected.
Fellow Commitments
- Be a full-time resident at the American University of Cairo for the duration of the fellowship. As needed, flexible attendance is accepted upon prior request and approval of the project’s PI.
- Producing a publishable peer-reviewed article in a reputable international journal in any of the above-mentioned areas of research.
- Organize a workshop based on her/his research topic, through which the scholar will receive detailed feedback from leading academics in the field.
- Help in the program’s research effort under the supervision of the project’s PI.
- Acknowledge support from the program in any subsequent publications resulting from the fellowship.
- Attend local presentations, conferences and workshops organized at AUC that are of relevance to the scholar’s research.
- Provide a monthly report outlining the tasks performed during the month.
- Provide a final report upon completion of the fellowship.
Compensation
- A monthly stipend of L.E. 15,000 for Egyptians or $1500 for non-Egyptian fellows.
- An economy return flight (for non-Egyptians).
- Access to library facilities at AUC.
- Funds to organize a research-focused workshop at AUC.
- Mentoring from the Principal Investigator of the Program.
How to apply
The applicant is expected to provide the following documents:
- A description of the research currently being performed, containing the themes, methodology, and stage of completion (not more than one page).
- A concept note and preliminary proposal for the intended publishable paper (not more than two pages in length, including a specific number and types of publications expected).
- Cover letter containing a description of research interests (not more than one-page in length including a brief description of the applicant’s academic career).
- An updated Curriculum Vitae
- One or two recent writing samples (articles or book chapters)
- Names and contacts of references
