The ACSS Research Ethics program on Ethics of Social Research: Institutional Protocols and Practices organized a two-day workshop for Jordanian and Palestinian institutions that received funding in August 2023 to undertake projects for enhancing research ethics culture and practices in their institutions. The workshop took place at the Institute for Critical Thought in Amman, Jordan on January 24 and 25, 2024. Participating institutions included Insaniyyat: Society of Palestinian Anthropologists, Royal Scientific Society, An-Najah University, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Al-Quds University’s Legal Clinic, and Jerusalem Center for Women. The workshop was also attended by members of the program selection committee members, Islah Jad from Birzeit University, Mai Abu Moghli from the Center for Lebanese Studies, and Jamil Mouawad from the American University of Beirut.

The objective of the workshop was for representatives of grantee institutions to present the progress they have made with their projects and share as well the challenges they encountered. Members of the selection committee provided constructive feedback and engaged with the participants in productive discussions about the ethics of research in the context of conflicts, wars and occupation, research ethics and the role of donors as well as the need to establish research ethics frameworks that take into account the sociopolitical and cultural circumstances of the Arab region.
